Why does gastroenteritis cause fever?

Fever is a common presentation of Gastroenteritis. Chemical signals released during the immune response can reset the body's temperature control point, leading to feeling hot, shivery, sweaty, or achy.

Gastroenteritis affects the stomach and intestines and may cause diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and reduced appetite. Fever can accompany these symptoms, but it is not present in every episode.

A raised temperature is a body response, not a diagnosis on its own. Its significance depends on how unwell you feel, whether fluids are staying down, and whether there are warning symptoms such as severe pain or blood in stool.

Rest, wear comfortable light clothing, and drink small amounts often. Vomiting and diarrhoea can increase fluid loss, so keep a drink nearby even if you are not able to eat much.

A pharmacist can advise on fever medicine that is suitable for you and on oral rehydration products. Check first if you have kidney, liver, stomach, or bleeding problems; take regular medicines; are pregnant; or are caring for a child.

Seek urgent medical care if fever occurs with confusion, a stiff neck, breathing difficulty, a new widespread rash, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, fainting, or signs of dehydration.

Arrange medical advice if fever persists, symptoms are getting worse, you cannot keep fluids down, or you have a weakened immune system or a serious long-term condition. Babies and very young children with fever should be assessed promptly.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest a need for tests and which medicines are appropriate. Explain when the fever began, the highest reading you have measured, your fluid intake and urine output, and whether diarrhoea, vomiting, pain, or blood in stool are present.
