Why does gastritis cause indigestion?

Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, can feel like burning or aching in the upper abdomen, unpleasant fullness after a meal, bloating, nausea, or frequent burping. When the stomach lining is irritated, normal stretching and acid exposure may be felt more strongly, so even a usual meal can seem uncomfortable.

Indigestion is a very common presentation of Gastritis, but it is not specific to gastritis. Reflux, certain medicines, ulcers, food-related triggers, and other digestive conditions can produce a similar feeling. The location of discomfort, its timing, and associated symptoms help guide the next steps.

Have smaller, slower meals and avoid foods or drinks that repeatedly bring on symptoms. Limit alcohol and fizzy drinks if they worsen discomfort. Avoid smoking, which can irritate the digestive tract. Do not use anti-inflammatory pain medicines for stomach pain unless a clinician or pharmacist says they are suitable for you.

Make a record of meals, pain location, nausea, bowel changes, and medicines. A pharmacist can advise on appropriate symptom relief and identify treatments that may interact with your regular medicines.

See a clinician if indigestion continues, comes back often, wakes you from sleep, or changes what you can eat. Get urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe or worsening pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, trouble swallowing, or unexplained weight loss.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest gastritis or another digestive condition, whether medicines may be contributing, and whether testing is appropriate. Mention any previous ulcer, reflux, liver, or gallbladder problem as well as all medicines and supplements.
