Why does gastritis cause hiccups?

Short answer
Gastritis may trigger hiccups when stomach irritation or fullness stimulates nerves involved in the diaphragm reflex that produces the repeated hiccup movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Body mechanism
- Hiccups involve the diaphragm and vocal cords.
- Possible accompaniment
- Bloating or upper abdominal discomfort can occur with gastritis.
What may be happening
A hiccup is a sudden involuntary contraction of the diaphragm followed by closure of the vocal cords. The diaphragm sits close to the stomach. When the stomach is inflamed, bloated, or stretched after a meal, signals from this area can sometimes set off the hiccup reflex.
Hiccups is a common presentation of Gastritis, and they may occur alongside upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, burping, or early fullness. Hiccups also have many everyday triggers, including eating quickly, fizzy drinks, alcohol, and abrupt temperature changes in food or drink.
Gentle measures
Eat slowly and choose smaller portions while symptoms are active. Avoid fizzy drinks and identify foods or drinks that seem to worsen bloating or stomach discomfort. Sipping water and pausing between bites may reduce swallowed air. Avoid alcohol if it appears to aggravate the irritation.
If you are using anti-inflammatory pain medicine, discuss it with a pharmacist or clinician rather than changing prescribed treatment on your own. Recording the duration of hiccup episodes and associated symptoms will help with assessment.
When it needs assessment
Contact a clinician if hiccups keep returning, last a long time, disrupt sleep or eating, or occur with persistent stomach symptoms. Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fainting, or difficulty swallowing.
What to discuss
Ask whether the hiccups could be related to stomach inflammation, reflux, a medicine, or another cause. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and explain whether episodes follow meals, drinks, or particular body positions.
