Why do gallstones cause jaundice?

Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that the liver puts into bile. A stone that reaches the common bile duct can obstruct this route, causing bilirubin to collect in the bloodstream. This can yellow the eyes and skin, darken urine, and make stools paler because bile pigment is no longer reaching the intestine normally. Jaundice is a very common presentation of Gallstones, but other liver, blood, and bile-duct problems can also cause it. Assessment focuses on finding the source of obstruction rather than assuming a cause.

Contact a clinician promptly for yellow eyes or skin. They may arrange blood tests to check bilirubin and liver function, followed by ultrasound or other imaging to assess the gallbladder and ducts. A blocked duct sometimes needs a procedure to restore bile drainage, while longer-term treatment depends on the findings. Until you are assessed, follow any individual advice already given to you and avoid delaying care if symptoms change.

Seek urgent assessment for jaundice with fever, chills, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or feeling acutely unwell. A blockage can be complicated by inflammation or infection in the bile system. Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, severe weakness, or breathing difficulty.
