Why does gallbladder cancer cause jaundice?

Bile normally travels from the liver through ducts into the small bowel. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment carried in bile. When its route is obstructed, bilirubin can build up and make the whites of the eyes and skin look yellow. Urine may become darker and stools may look paler because less bile pigment reaches the bowel.
