Why Does Frozen Shoulder Cause Reduced Range of Motion?

Short answer
Reduced Range of Motion is a very common presentation of Frozen Shoulder because the joint capsule tightens and leaves less room for the shoulder to move.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main restriction
- Lifting, rotating, or reaching behind the body
- Why pain matters
- Protective muscle tension can further limit movement
How the restriction develops
The shoulder capsule is a sleeve of tissue around the joint. It normally stretches as the arm lifts, rotates, or reaches behind the body. With Frozen Shoulder, inflammation may be followed by thickening and contraction of this sleeve. The joint becomes less flexible, so the arm may stop before it reaches its usual position.
Pain can make the limitation stronger: you may tense the surrounding muscles and avoid movements that hurt. In Frozen Shoulder, even movement performed with assistance can be restricted. Stiffness may interfere with washing, dressing, reaching shelves, or fastening clothes. A similar limitation can have other causes, so assessment should look at strength, sensation, and the joint itself.
What may help
Use gentle, regular movement within a tolerable range and avoid sudden jerks or forceful attempts to regain motion. A physiotherapist can guide stretching, posture, and strengthening according to your symptoms. Supporting the arm during rest and using warmth before exercises may improve comfort. Discuss medication or other treatment choices with a qualified clinician, especially if you have other health conditions.
When to seek care
Seek an assessment when movement is progressively shrinking, daily tasks are becoming difficult, or pain is disturbing sleep. Get prompt help after an injury with sudden loss of movement, visible deformity, marked swelling, fever, new numbness, or significant weakness. A clinician can check whether the pattern fits Frozen Shoulder and whether another problem needs different care.
Questions to ask
Ask which directions are most restricted, what range of exercise is appropriate, and how to measure useful progress. Ask whether your work or sleep position needs changing and when the treatment plan should be reassessed.

Questions people ask
Can I push through the stiffness?
Forceful movement can increase irritation. Controlled exercises within a tolerable range are usually more suitable than aggressive stretching.
Is weakness the same as reduced movement?
No. Weakness limits what you can actively do, while Frozen Shoulder can restrict both active and assisted movement.
