Why does folliculitis cause red bumps on arms?

The upper arms contain many hair follicles. When follicles become irritated, blocked, or inflamed, each one can form a small raised spot centred on a hair. Several affected follicles close together create a rough or clustered appearance, while inflammation adds redness, itch, tenderness, or an occasional pustule.
