Why does folliculitis cause ingrown hairs?

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. Swelling and irritation can make the opening harder for a hair to pass through. A shaved, waxed, or naturally curly hair may then curve back into the skin, causing a small tender or itchy bump. The trapped hair can keep the surrounding inflammation active.

Ingrown Hairs is a common presentation of Folliculitis. Similar bumps can also follow friction, hair removal, acne-like inflammation, or a reaction to a product, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Pause shaving, waxing, and plucking over the affected skin while it settles. Wash gently, avoid tight clothing or repeated rubbing, and do not dig for the hair with a needle or squeeze the bump. A clinician may recommend a suitable anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial treatment after checking whether the follicles are irritated, infected, or both.

Book an assessment if bumps keep returning, spread beyond the hair-removal area, drain pus, leave dark marks or scars, or fail to settle after removing the trigger. Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening pain, warmth, swelling, or fever.
