Why Does Follicular Lymphoma Cause Swollen Lymph Nodes?

Swollen Lymph Nodes is a very common presentation of Follicular Lymphoma. The swelling may develop slowly and can occur in the neck, armpit, chest or abdomen. Affected nodes may feel firm or rubbery and are often not painful, although discomfort can occur when a node presses on nearby tissue.

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that filter lymph fluid and contain lymphocytes. In follicular lymphoma, a change in a B lymphocyte allows it to survive and reproduce when it should not. These cells tend to arrange themselves in follicle-like patterns, which gives this lymphoma its name. As the abnormal cells accumulate, the affected node becomes larger.

A swollen node can also result from infection or another condition, so its presence alone cannot identify the cause. Clinicians consider its location, size, texture, pattern of growth and other symptoms. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, imaging and a biopsy when lymphoma needs to be confirmed.

If follicular lymphoma has been diagnosed, tell your oncology team about a new node, a noticeable change in an existing swelling, pain or pressure. Keep track of where the swelling is, when you first noticed it and whether it changes over time. Do not repeatedly press or massage the area, because this can make it sore and makes changes harder to judge.

Your team may recommend monitoring, further testing or treatment based on the extent of lymphoma, symptoms and overall health. The right plan is individual; a change in node size does not by itself show what treatment is needed.

Contact your oncology team promptly if a swelling grows quickly, becomes very painful, turns red or is accompanied by persistent fever, drenching night sweats, marked tiredness or unexplained weight loss. These changes need assessment because they may reflect infection, lymphoma activity or another problem.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, severe chest pressure, sudden weakness or confusion. A node in the chest or neck can sometimes press on nearby structures, and breathing or swallowing problems should not wait for a routine appointment.
