Why does fibrocystic breast changes cause breast lump?

Breast Lump is a very common presentation of Fibrocystic Breast Changes. Cysts are small fluid-filled spaces, while fibrous tissue is denser and can feel firm or rope-like. Hormonal shifts across the menstrual cycle may make this tissue swell, feel fuller, or become more noticeable before bleeding begins. Lumps may occur in one or both breasts and can change in size or tenderness. These patterns are often benign, but a new or changing lump still deserves an assessment because several breast conditions can feel similar.

Notice whether the area changes with your cycle and record pain, size, and location without repeatedly pressing it. Wear a supportive bra if movement increases discomfort. A clinician may examine the breast and request ultrasound or another scan to distinguish cystic from solid tissue. If a cyst is large or uncomfortable, drainage may be discussed; other findings may need sampling or follow-up.

Arrange a breast assessment for a new lump, a lump that remains after your cycle, or a change in its size or feel. Contact a clinician promptly for nipple discharge that is bloody or spontaneous, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or an armpit swelling. Seek urgent care for a hot, red, very painful breast with fever.

Ask whether the area feels cystic or solid, whether imaging is appropriate, how to track it through your cycle, and what change should prompt another visit. Ask how pain can be managed if symptoms interfere with sleep, work, or exercise.
