Why does fatty liver disease cause jaundice?

Short answer
Fatty liver disease can cause jaundice when liver inflammation or scarring interferes with processing and clearing bilirubin, allowing this yellow pigment to build up in the body.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Visible sign
- Yellowing often appears in the whites of the eyes.
- Why it happens
- Bilirubin is not being processed or cleared normally.
What the colour change reflects
Bilirubin is produced as old red blood cells are broken down. The liver normally changes it and sends it into bile for removal. If liver cells are significantly injured, or bile flow is impaired, bilirubin can rise in the bloodstream. The whites of the eyes may turn yellow before skin changes are obvious, and urine can become darker while stools may look paler. Jaundice is a common presentation of Fatty Liver Disease. It can also occur with gallbladder, bile-duct, blood, and other liver conditions, so the cause needs medical assessment.
What to do next
Arrange a medical review promptly if you notice yellow eyes or skin. A clinician may ask about alcohol, medicines, supplements, recent illness, abdominal symptoms, and changes in urine or stool, then arrange blood tests or imaging if needed. Avoid alcohol until you have been advised otherwise, and do not start supplements or stop prescribed medicines without clinical advice. Bring a full list of medicines, including non-prescription products, to the appointment.
When to seek urgent care
Get urgent assessment for jaundice with severe upper abdominal pain, fever or shivering, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, swelling of the abdomen, or bleeding or black stools. Seek emergency help if a person with jaundice becomes difficult to wake or seems confused. These features can signal a serious infection, blockage, or worsening liver function and should not wait for a routine visit.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may be causing the bilirubin rise, whether there are signs of inflammation or scarring, and which medicines or supplements you should avoid. Ask what changes in urine, stool, pain, or alertness should prompt urgent care, and how follow-up will be arranged.
