Why does erysipelas cause facial swelling?

The affected skin may become red, warm, tender, and clearly outlined. Symptoms can develop quickly and may be accompanied by feeling unwell.

Erysipelas affects the upper layers of the skin and nearby lymphatic channels. Inflammation widens small blood vessels and allows fluid to collect, producing swelling. Facial Swelling is a common presentation of Erysipelas.

Facial swelling can also result from allergy, dental problems, injury, or other infections. The cause needs assessment, particularly when redness and pain are spreading or the eye area is involved.

Contact a clinician promptly if you think you may have a skin infection on the face. Treatment may include prescribed antibiotics; take them exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless a clinician tells you otherwise.

Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid picking at or squeezing the affected skin. Take a photo or note the edge of the redness so changes can be described accurately to the clinician.

Seek urgent medical care for swelling around the eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading redness, or severe illness. These features need prompt examination rather than home treatment alone.

Ask whether the skin changes fit erysipelas, whether an entry point such as a skin crack needs attention, and how soon you should expect review if swelling or redness is not improving.
