Why does endometriosis cause ovulation pain?

Endometriosis is tissue similar to the uterine lining growing outside the uterus. Lesions may sit near an ovary, fallopian tube, bowel, bladder, or pelvic lining. Around ovulation, the ovary changes as it releases an egg, and nearby inflammation or scar tissue can make that movement painful. The pain may be one-sided, cramping, stabbing, or aching, and may spread into the back or thigh. Ovulation pain can also occur without endometriosis, so its timing does not identify one diagnosis.

Record the side, timing, duration, severity, and related symptoms such as painful periods, pain with sex, bowel symptoms, or difficulty becoming pregnant. A clinician can review the pattern and consider an examination, ultrasound, or other evaluation. Treatment may include symptom relief, hormonal options, or specialist care, depending on your goals and findings. Use medicines only as directed and mention pregnancy plans before starting hormonal treatment.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, or pain with a positive pregnancy test. Arrange a routine review when mid-cycle pain is new, worsening, or limiting normal activities.
