Why do endometrial polyps cause bleeding after menopause?

After menopause, the uterine lining is usually thinner because ovarian hormone levels have changed. An endometrial polyp is a local growth that does not follow the same smooth pattern as the surrounding lining. Its surface can be fragile and may bleed with minor contact or irritation. Bleeding may appear as spotting, pink discharge, or a more noticeable flow. Even when a polyp is a possible explanation, any bleeding after menopause needs medical assessment because other causes can require different care.

Contact a gynaecology or primary-care service promptly and describe the colour, amount, timing, and duration of the bleeding. Assessment may include an examination and an ultrasound to view the uterine lining. If a polyp or another area needs closer evaluation, the clinician may discuss hysteroscopy or sampling. Bring a list of medicines, including hormone therapy and blood thinners.

Seek urgent care if the bleeding is heavy, continues, or comes with dizziness, fainting, severe pain, fever, or unusual weakness. Do not wait for a routine appointment if you feel acutely unwell.
