Why does ectopic pregnancy cause bleeding in early pregnancy?

In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilised egg implants outside the main cavity of the uterus, often in a fallopian tube. That location cannot support the pregnancy in the same way as the uterine lining. Local irritation and stretching can cause bleeding from nearby tissue, while changing pregnancy hormones can cause the uterine lining to shed small amounts of blood through the vagina. Bleeding may be light or heavier, and it may come with one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, or faintness.

Bleeding in Early Pregnancy is a common presentation of Ectopic Pregnancy. It also occurs with other pregnancy changes, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Contact a maternity or emergency service promptly for bleeding in early pregnancy, particularly when pain is present. Keep track of when it began, how it changes, and whether pain is one-sided. A clinician may use pregnancy-hormone tests, an examination, and ultrasound to determine where the pregnancy is located and whether treatment is needed. Do not delay assessment while waiting for bleeding to stop.

Seek emergency help for severe or increasing abdominal or pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, heavy bleeding, or looking pale and clammy. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding and require immediate care. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell.
