Why does earwax buildup cause earache?

Earwax normally protects the ear canal by catching debris and helping keep the skin from becoming too dry. It usually works its way outward naturally. Wax can accumulate when the canal is narrow, when hearing devices or earplugs hold it in, or when cotton buds push it deeper. A compacted plug may create fullness, itch, altered hearing or discomfort. Earache is a common presentation of Earwax Buildup, but ear pain has other possible causes, including infection, jaw problems and injury.

Pain that starts after swimming, a cold, dental symptoms or a blow to the ear needs its own assessment rather than being assumed to be wax.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening pain, fever with ear symptoms, swelling behind the ear, dizziness, facial weakness, bleeding, pus-like discharge, sudden hearing change, or an object in the ear. Arrange an appointment if discomfort persists, repeatedly returns, or affects hearing or sleep.
