Why does dyshidrotic eczema cause skin blisters?

Dyshidrotic eczema can produce tightly grouped, deep-seated blisters that look like tiny beads under the skin. They often appear on the sides of the fingers, palms, soles, or sides of the feet and may itch, sting, or feel tense. The fluid is part of the skin’s inflammatory response; it is not a sign that the skin is dirty. Blisters may dry and leave peeling or cracked areas as the episode improves.

Do not deliberately puncture the blisters. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and protect areas that rub against shoes, tools, or clothing. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser on dry surrounding skin, and avoid products that sting. Keep a note of heat, sweating, friction, gloves, metals, or new products that seem to precede episodes. A clinician may prescribe treatment to settle inflammation and protect the skin barrier.

Seek care if blisters are painful, spreading, recurrent, or interfering with walking or daily tasks. Prompt assessment is needed for pus, increasing warmth, swelling, spreading redness, red streaks, or fever. Emergency help is appropriate for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, particularly if symptoms began after a new exposure.
