Why does Dupuytren's contracture cause finger stiffness?

Dupuytren's contracture affects a sheet of connective tissue beneath the skin of the palm. As this tissue becomes thicker and tighter, it can form cords that extend toward the fingers. The cords pull on the finger joints, often making straightening harder than bending. A firm nodule, puckering skin or a finger that rests partly bent may appear. Stiffness can make tasks such as placing the hand flat, wearing gloves or reaching into a pocket more difficult.

Book an assessment if stiffness is progressing or affecting work, dressing or hygiene. A clinician can examine which joints are restricted and discuss observation, hand therapy or a procedure when appropriate. Do not force a bent finger straight or use aggressive stretching without guidance, because irritated tissue can become more painful. Keep a note of changes in finger position and activities that are becoming difficult.

Seek prompt review if stiffness develops suddenly, follows an injury, or comes with marked redness, warmth, swelling or fever. Arrange an earlier appointment when a finger is increasingly bent, the palm becomes painful, or you can no longer place the hand comfortably on a flat surface.
