Why does dry eye cause blurred vision?

Tears form a clear coating over the cornea, the transparent front surface of the eye. When that coating evaporates too quickly or is not produced in a stable amount, it can develop dry patches. Light then scatters rather than focusing cleanly, so vision may look hazy, fluctuate while reading, or sharpen after blinking. Blurred Vision is a common presentation of Dry Eye, but blurred sight also has other causes.

Screen use, air conditioning, wind, smoke, contact lenses and some medicines can make dryness more noticeable. Burning, grittiness, watering and sensitivity to light can occur alongside it.

Pause visual tasks and blink fully, especially when using a phone or computer. Rest your eyes away from moving air and avoid smoke where possible. If you wear contact lenses, follow the care instructions and stop wearing them if they are uncomfortable until you have advice.

Make a note of when the blur happens, whether it improves after blinking, and any drops or medicines you use. That information can help an eye professional assess the pattern.
