Why does diphtheria cause sore throat?

The bacteria can damage the lining of the nose and throat. The body responds with inflammation, which can make the throat feel raw and make swallowing uncomfortable. A grey or white membrane may form over the tonsils, throat, or nose; trying to remove it can cause bleeding. Sore Throat is a common presentation of Diphtheria, but sore throat has many other causes.

Diphtheria can also cause fever, swollen neck glands, weakness, or a hoarse voice. The illness needs prompt assessment because swelling or the membrane can narrow the airway, and the bacterial toxin can affect other organs.

Arrange urgent medical assessment if diphtheria is suspected, especially after contact with a person who may have the infection or after travel where vaccination status is uncertain. A clinician can examine the throat, take appropriate samples, and decide on treatment and infection-control steps. Avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or close face-to-face contact while you are being assessed.

Bring a list of symptoms, when they began, recent travel or contacts, and your vaccination record if available. Follow the care team’s instructions about medicines, testing, and contact precautions.

Seek emergency help immediately for trouble breathing, noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, marked drowsiness, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or severe weakness. These signs can indicate airway involvement or serious illness. Do not wait to see whether symptoms settle if breathing becomes difficult.

Ask whether the throat appearance suggests diphtheria or another infection, which tests are needed, whether household or close contacts need advice, and when it is safe to return to usual activities.
