Why does diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cause swollen lymph nodes?

Swollen Lymph Nodes is a very common presentation of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma. The disease begins in B lymphocytes, immune cells found in lymphatic tissue. As abnormal cells multiply inside a lymph node, they can make it larger and firmer than usual. Nearby nodes may also enlarge as the condition involves more of the lymphatic system.

Lymph nodes filter lymph fluid and provide a meeting place for immune cells. In diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, changed B cells can collect within this tissue instead of following their normal life cycle. The node may feel like a painless lump in the neck, chest, armpit, or groin. Some people also have pressure symptoms when enlarged nodes press on nearby structures, along with tiredness, sweating during sleep, fever, or unplanned weight loss.

Swollen nodes have many possible causes, including infections and other immune conditions. A symptom alone cannot identify the cause. Clinicians use an examination and tests such as blood work, imaging, and sometimes a tissue biopsy to find out what is happening.

Arrange a medical assessment for a node that persists, grows, feels hard or fixed, or appears without a clear recent infection. Note when it appeared, whether it is changing, and any fever, night sweating, itching, or weight change. Do not repeatedly press or massage the area, as this can make it sore and harder to judge. Bring a list of medicines and previous illnesses to the appointment.

Seek urgent medical help if swelling is accompanied by trouble breathing or swallowing, sudden severe weakness, confusion, or a rapidly worsening fever. These problems can have causes unrelated to lymphoma but need prompt assessment. If lymphoma has already been diagnosed, follow the oncology team's instructions for fever or sudden symptom changes.
