Why does depression cause memory problems?

Short answer
Depression can cause memory problems because low energy, poor sleep, slowed thinking, and reduced attention make new information harder to take in and recall.

Attention comes before memory
Memory Problems is a very common presentation of Depression. Often the difficulty begins with concentration: when the mind is preoccupied, exhausted, or slowed down, details may not be stored clearly in the first place. You may lose track of a conversation, forget an appointment, struggle to choose words, or need longer to make decisions. Sleep problems, anxiety, alcohol or drug use, and some medicines can worsen forgetfulness. Memory changes can also have physical or neurological causes, so they deserve assessment when new, worsening, or disruptive.
Make daily tasks easier
Book a GP appointment and explain what you are forgetting, when it started, and how it affects daily life. Bring a list of medicines and, if possible, examples such as missed bills, repeated questions, or difficulty following instructions. Until you are assessed, use one calendar, written reminders, a consistent place for essential items, and shorter task lists. Rest, regular meals, and addressing depression can help thinking feel clearer, but do not assume every memory problem is caused by mood alone.
When to seek urgent assessment
Seek urgent medical care for sudden confusion, new trouble speaking, weakness or numbness on one side, a severe sudden headache, fainting, or a seizure. Get urgent local mental-health support if depression is accompanied by thoughts of self-harm or suicide, or if you do not feel able to stay safe.
