Why does dengue fever cause headache?

The immune system releases signalling chemicals while responding to the dengue virus. These can heighten pain sensitivity, while fever, poor fluid intake, reduced appetite, and disrupted sleep can add to head discomfort. Pain may feel diffuse or be felt behind the eyes, and bright light or movement may make it harder to tolerate. Headache is a very common presentation of Dengue Fever, but headache itself has many possible causes.

Rest in a cool, quiet room and take regular sips of fluid if you can keep them down. Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked drowsiness, confusion, fainting, cold clammy skin, or trouble breathing. These warning signs need prompt assessment, especially as the fever begins to settle. A sudden unusually severe headache, weakness on one side, a stiff neck, or new seizure also needs emergency evaluation.
