Why does dandruff cause flaky scalp?

Dandruff is linked with an irritated, oily scalp and an increased response to a normal scalp yeast. This can shorten the time between skin-cell formation and shedding. The cells then stick together, creating white or yellowish flakes that may collect in the hair or on clothing. Flaky Scalp is a very common presentation of Dandruff, although other scalp conditions can also cause scaling.

Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle shampoo, and use an anti-dandruff shampoo according to its label. Work the product onto the scalp rather than only the hair, and allow it the recommended contact time before rinsing. Avoid scratching, picking, or applying irritating hair products to sore skin. If flakes persist, a clinician can check whether eczema, psoriasis, contact irritation, or another condition is contributing.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if scaling is thick, painful, very itchy, bleeding, or spreading beyond the scalp, or if the scalp becomes notably red or swollen. Seek prompt care for sudden hair loss, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening tenderness. These features may need a different treatment approach than routine dandruff care.

Ask whether the pattern fits dandruff or another scalp disorder, how often to use a medicated shampoo, and which ingredients are suitable if your scalp is sensitive. Mention any new hair dye, styling product, or treatment that preceded the flaking.
