Why does cutaneous T-cell lymphoma cause persistent itching?

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma affects immune cells in the skin. Their activity can release inflammatory signals that stimulate nerve endings and create ongoing itch. Dryness, scaling, redness and a damaged skin barrier can amplify the sensation. Scratching may then cause small breaks in the skin, more irritation and a cycle that is difficult to stop.

Persistent itching can also come from eczema, allergies, infections, medicines, dry skin or other medical conditions. Its presence does not establish a diagnosis by itself. The appearance, distribution and duration of the skin changes help a clinician decide whether further assessment is needed.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, keep showers lukewarm and choose gentle, non-perfumed cleansers. Keep fingernails short and try tapping or applying a cool cloth instead of scratching. Tell your dermatologist if itching affects sleep, causes bleeding or is not controlled, because treatment can be adjusted to the skin findings and any lymphoma care you are receiving.

Contact your care team promptly if the skin becomes painful, hot, swollen, rapidly more extensive or starts draining, or if you develop fever or feel unwell. These changes can indicate infection or a significant flare. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a widespread blistering reaction.
