Why Does a Skin Yeast Infection Cause Itchy Skin?

Candida can multiply in warm, moist areas such as skin folds. The immune response to this overgrowth produces inflammation, which may cause itching, redness, soreness, scaling, or small spots near the edge of a rash. Scratching can damage the surface further, allowing more irritation and sometimes introducing bacteria. Itchy skin has many possible causes, so the symptom alone does not identify a yeast infection.

Keep affected folds clean and dry, patting rather than rubbing after washing. Choose loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. Avoid fragranced products or harsh scrubbing on the rash. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an antifungal treatment is suitable and how long to use it; do not apply steroid cream alone to a suspected fungal rash without advice, because it can alter its appearance and allow infection to persist.

Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, very painful, cracked, oozing, repeatedly returning, or not improving with appropriate care. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly increasing warmth or swelling, pus, or red streaks. People with diabetes, a weakened immune system, or frequent infections may need earlier review.
