Why does COVID-19 cause a runny nose?

The nasal lining traps particles and helps humidify air. When it is irritated by a viral infection, its blood vessels and mucus-producing cells become more active. This can lead to clear discharge, congestion, sneezing, or post-nasal drip. Runny Nose is a common presentation of COVID-19, yet allergies, colds, irritants, and other infections can also cause it.

Rest, drink fluids, and use soft tissues to avoid skin irritation. A saline nasal spray or rinse can help clear mucus; use clean water and follow product instructions. Humidified air may feel soothing, but take care around hot steam to avoid burns. Ask a pharmacist before using decongestants if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, or take other medicines.

Urgent assessment is needed for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, or inability to stay awake. Arrange a review for severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, a stiff neck, bloody discharge after an injury, or nasal symptoms that persist and interfere with sleep, hydration, or daily life.
