Why does contact dermatitis cause burning skin?

An irritant can weaken the skin barrier directly, while an allergic reaction prompts immune activity in the skin. Both pathways release inflammatory signals and increase sensitivity in the exposed area. Water, sweat, heat, clothing, or skincare products may then feel unusually sharp. Burning can occur with redness, dryness, scaling, itching, or small blisters. The sensation often reflects an active barrier reaction, but its intensity does not identify the exact trigger by itself.

Rinse away a suspected irritant with lukewarm water and stop the new product, cosmetic, detergent, or adhesive until the skin has recovered. Pat dry rather than rubbing. A cool compress and a bland, fragrance-free moisturiser may reduce discomfort when the skin is not open or oozing. Avoid scrubs, essential oils, hot water, and fragranced products. Keep a short record of exposures, locations, and timing to discuss with a pharmacist or clinician.

Get medical advice if burning is severe, affects the eyes or genitals, covers a large area, or continues despite avoiding the suspected trigger. Prompt review is appropriate when pain is increasing or the skin becomes hot, swollen, crusted, or draining. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, facial or tongue swelling, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction.
