Why does contact dermatitis cause skin blisters?

Contact dermatitis follows exposure to something that irritates the skin or triggers an immune reaction, such as a cleanser, metal, adhesive, plant, or cosmetic ingredient. Inflammation loosens connections between nearby skin cells. Fluid then gathers in the small space, creating a bubble. Blisters may be tiny and grouped together or larger and tense. Itching, warmth, redness, soreness, or peeling can occur around them. A blister can break and leave a raw surface, which is easier for germs to enter.

Stop using the suspected product and gently rinse the area if exposure was recent. Do not deliberately pop the blisters; the covering helps protect the tender skin underneath. Use a cool, damp compress for short periods, keep the area clean, and avoid friction. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable anti-inflammatory treatment is appropriate for the body site and your health history. Note what touched the skin and when the reaction appeared, because that pattern can help identify the trigger.

Arrange medical advice if blisters are widespread, very painful, repeatedly returning, or not settling after the suspected exposure stops. Seek prompt care for spreading warmth or redness, pus, increasing swelling, fever, or red streaks, which can signal infection. Emergency help is needed for swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction.
