Why Does Contact Dermatitis Cause Itchy Skin?

Contact dermatitis begins after skin meets an irritant or a substance that triggers an allergy. The outer barrier becomes inflamed, and chemical messengers make nearby nerve endings more sensitive. This produces itching, sometimes with redness, warmth, dryness, scaling, burning, swelling, or blisters. Scratching may briefly distract from the itch but can cause tiny breaks in the skin, allowing more irritation and prolonging the cycle. The rash is often strongest where contact occurred, although it can spread through touch or scratching.

Wash away a suspected irritant with lukewarm water, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Pause new cosmetics, fragrances, detergents, gloves, or topical products until the pattern is clearer. Apply a bland moisturiser to support the barrier and keep nails short to reduce scratching damage. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an appropriate anti-inflammatory treatment; avoid applying unfamiliar products to broken skin without advice.

Arrange an examination if the itch is severe, widespread, recurrent, infected-looking, or not improving after avoiding a suspected trigger. A clinician can consider eczema, hives, scabies, fungal infection, or medication reactions when the appearance does not fit contact dermatitis. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, or a rapidly spreading blistering rash.
