Why Does Contact Dermatitis Cause Itchy Feet?

Contact dermatitis may follow exposure to footwear materials, dyes, adhesives, rubber, detergents, creams, or sweat trapped against the skin. Irritant contact dermatitis damages the outer barrier directly, while allergic contact dermatitis involves an immune response to a substance the body recognises as a trigger. Itching can come with redness, dryness, scaling, burning, cracks, or small blisters. The pattern may match the top of a shoe, the sole, or the spaces between toes.

Think about new shoes, insoles, socks, laundry products, foot creams, and workplace exposures. Stop a suspected product when safe, rinse the area gently, dry carefully between toes, and use a plain moisturiser on dry skin. Choose breathable footwear while the skin settles and resist scratching, which can break the barrier. A clinician may recommend a short course of medicine or patch testing when the trigger is unclear or the rash keeps returning.

Get medical advice if swelling, pain, oozing, warmth, spreading redness, or open cracks develop, or if walking becomes uncomfortable. Prompt assessment is also sensible when the rash persists after removing a suspected trigger, because fungal infection and other foot conditions can look similar. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or trouble breathing after an exposure.
