Why does common cold cause sore throat?

The cold virus can inflame tissues at the back of the nose and throat, making swallowing feel uncomfortable. Mucus running down the back of the throat can provoke coughing or frequent throat clearing, which may prolong irritation. A blocked nose may also lead to mouth breathing, drying the throat overnight. Sip water or warm drinks often to keep the throat moist. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, severe neck swelling, or confusion. Arrange medical advice if throat pain is severe, symptoms are worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, or fever remains troublesome. Children with poor drinking, fewer wet nappies, unusual sleepiness, or breathing changes should be assessed promptly.
