Why does chronic lymphocytic leukaemia cause swollen lymph nodes?

Swollen Lymph Nodes is a common presentation of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia. Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that filter lymph and help coordinate responses to infection. In this leukaemia, abnormal B lymphocytes can build up in the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic tissues. When these cells collect inside a node, the node may expand.

The swelling can occur in the neck, armpits, or groin, and it may be painless. Lymph nodes also enlarge with infections and inflammatory conditions, so their size or location cannot establish the cause. A clinician considers the whole pattern, including other symptoms and blood-test findings.

Arrange a medical review for a new, persistent, or unexplained lump in the neck, armpit, or groin. The clinician may feel the nodes and ask about recent infections, medicines, weight change, fever, sweating, or unusual tiredness. Blood tests can assess blood-cell patterns, and further tests may be considered when the examination or results call for them.

Note when you first noticed the swelling, whether it is changing, whether more than one area is affected, and whether it is tender. Avoid repeatedly pressing the node, which can make the area sore and make changes harder to judge. Do not assume a swollen node has one specific cause without an assessment.

Seek prompt medical advice when lymph-node swelling does not settle, continues to grow, or occurs in several areas without a clear explanation. Ask for urgent help if swelling is associated with trouble breathing or swallowing, severe weakness, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. A fever or other acute symptoms may need timely assessment even when the node itself is not painful.
