Why does chlamydia cause vaginal discharge?

Vaginal Discharge is a common presentation of Chlamydia. Inflammation around the cervix can produce extra fluid and inflammatory cells, so discharge may look different from your usual pattern. It may be watery, cloudy, or yellowish, although appearance varies and some people have no noticeable change. Burning when urinating, pelvic pain, bleeding after sex, or pain during sex can occur as well.

Discharge is also affected by normal cycle changes, thrush, bacterial vaginosis, and other sexually transmitted infections. Colour or smell cannot diagnose chlamydia by itself. Testing is needed, particularly after sex without a condom, a new partner, or contact with someone who has an infection.

Book an appointment with a clinician or sexual-health service for testing. Depending on your circumstances, testing can involve urine or a vaginal, cervical, or other swab. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, recent antibiotics, symptoms, and any new sexual partner so the assessment covers relevant causes.

If chlamydia is diagnosed, use the prescribed medicine as instructed and pause sexual contact until treatment guidance has been completed. Partners may need testing and treatment. Avoid douching and fragranced washes, which can disturb the normal vaginal environment and make irritation worse.

Seek urgent care for severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, fainting, vomiting, or feeling acutely unwell. If you are pregnant or could be pregnant, contact a clinician promptly about new discharge, pain, or bleeding. These symptoms can require assessment for complications and other pregnancy-related conditions.

Ask which tests are suitable, whether you should be checked for other infections, how to take any treatment, and when sex can safely resume. Ask what follow-up is needed if discharge continues after treatment.
