Why does chlamydia cause breakthrough bleeding?

Breakthrough Bleeding is a common presentation of Chlamydia. The infection can cause cervicitis, or inflammation of the cervix. Irritated cervical tissue may bleed with light contact, including sex or an examination. Bleeding can also appear as spotting between menstrual periods. Some people have no other symptoms, while others notice discharge, burning when urinating, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex.

Bleeding between periods has several possible explanations, including contraception changes, pregnancy-related causes, other infections, or cervical conditions. A symptom alone cannot identify the cause, so testing is the practical way to check for chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections.

Arrange a sexual-health or medical assessment if the bleeding is new, keeps returning, or follows sex. Testing may use a urine sample or a vaginal, cervical, or other swab, depending on your situation. If chlamydia is confirmed, take the prescribed treatment exactly as directed and avoid sex until the clinician says it is safe to resume. Recent partners may also need testing and treatment to prevent passing the infection back and forth.

Do not douche or use scented products to manage the symptom; these can further irritate vaginal or cervical tissue. Note when the spotting occurs, its amount, and any associated pain or discharge.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or feeling very unwell. Get prompt advice if you may be pregnant, because bleeding with pain needs assessment for pregnancy-related causes. Sudden worsening pain, vomiting, or shoulder-tip pain also warrants urgent evaluation.
