Why does chickenpox cause fever?

Those signals raise the body's temperature set point and help coordinate its response to infection. Fever is a very common presentation of Chickenpox, especially around the time the rash begins.

A child may feel tired, less hungry, chilly, or generally unwell before or alongside the itchy spots. The fever itself does not describe how severe the illness will be; focus on the child's alertness, drinking, breathing, and comfort.

The rash changes from small raised spots to fluid-filled blisters and then crusts. Scratching can damage the skin and create an opening for a bacterial skin infection.

Offer frequent fluids, light clothing, a comfortably cool room, and quiet rest. Use a fever medicine that is suitable for the child's age and follow the label or a clinician's advice. Avoid aspirin in children and teenagers with a viral illness.

Keep fingernails short and clean, and consider loose cotton clothing to reduce skin irritation. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on itch relief and on medicines to avoid.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness or confusion, a severe headache with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting, a seizure, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine or an inability to keep fluids down.

Contact a clinician promptly if the skin becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, very painful, or produces pus. Babies, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system need individual advice if chickenpox is suspected.
