Why does cheilitis cause chapped lips?

Chapped Lips is a very common presentation of Cheilitis. The lips have a delicate outer barrier and are exposed to saliva, wind, dry air, cosmetics, toothpaste, and foods. Inflammation can make the surface flaky, tight, burning, tender, or split at the corners. Licking the lips may briefly wet them but repeated evaporation and saliva irritation can worsen dryness. Cheilitis has different forms, including irritant, allergic, angular, and inflammatory types, so the trigger is not always the same.

Apply a bland, fragrance-free ointment regularly, especially after eating and before sleep. Avoid licking, biting, peeling flakes, and products that sting. Pause new lip balms, plumping products, fragranced cosmetics, and toothpaste changes until the cause is clearer. Protect lips from wind and sun, drink normally, and keep saliva from pooling at the corners. A clinician can check for contact allergy, infection, medication effects, or an inflammatory condition and advise targeted treatment.
