Why does cervical radiculopathy cause shoulder pain?

The nerves that leave the cervical spine carry information from connected regions of the upper limb. When one root is irritated, the brain may interpret the signal as pain near the shoulder even when the shoulder joint itself is not the source. Neck movement may change the pain, and tingling or weakness can accompany it.

A rotator-cuff problem, arthritis, bursitis, or another shoulder condition can also hurt in this area. Assessment usually compares neck movement with shoulder movement and checks strength, reflexes, and sensation.

Arrange an examination if shoulder pain is persistent, spreads into the arm, or comes with tingling or weakness. Keep the shoulder and neck moving gently within comfort, vary desk and sleep positions, and avoid repeatedly testing the painful movement with heavy loads.

Seek urgent help for rapidly increasing weakness, severe pain after injury, chest pressure or breathlessness, fever with a very stiff neck, or new problems with walking, coordination, or bladder or bowel control. Sudden neurological changes require emergency assessment.
