Why does cervical radiculopathy cause hand numbness?

Nerves leaving the cervical spine carry feeling from the arm and hand as well as movement instructions. When a root is inflamed or crowded by a disc or joint change, its messages may become distorted. The affected fingers can help a clinician identify which nerve pathway is involved, although hand numbness also has other possible causes such as pressure on a nerve at the wrist or elbow.

Symptoms may travel from the neck through the shoulder and arm, or be felt mainly in the hand. Neck position, coughing, or prolonged posture can sometimes alter the sensation.

Arrange an assessment if numbness persists, recurs, or interferes with grip or sleep. A clinician can check sensation, reflexes, strength, and neck movement. Until then, vary your posture, avoid leaning on the elbow, and use only gentle movement that does not increase arm symptoms. Do not ignore repeated dropping of objects.

Seek urgent medical care for rapidly worsening numbness, new or increasing weakness, trouble walking, loss of balance, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Sudden numbness with facial weakness, speech trouble, or severe dizziness needs emergency attention. These signs can have causes other than a neck nerve problem.

Ask which fingers and examination findings fit a cervical nerve root, whether another nerve site could explain the pattern, and which activities or exercises are suitable while symptoms settle.
