Why does cervical ectropion cause vaginal discharge?

In cervical ectropion, cells normally found inside the cervical canal extend onto the outer surface of the cervix. These cells make mucus, so the change can increase clear, white, or slightly yellow discharge. Vaginal Discharge is a common presentation of Cervical Ectropion. The discharge itself does not confirm the cause; infections, hormonal changes, and other cervical conditions can produce similar symptoms.

Some people also notice light bleeding after sex because the exposed cells are more delicate. Cervical ectropion is often linked with hormonal changes, including those seen during pregnancy or while using combined hormonal contraception.

Notice the discharge’s colour, smell, thickness, and timing, and record whether you have itching, pain, bleeding, or pain when passing urine. Arrange a clinical assessment if the discharge is new, persistent, strongly unpleasant, green, or accompanied by pelvic discomfort. A clinician may examine the cervix and offer swabs or other tests before deciding whether the ectropion needs treatment.

If cervical ectropion is confirmed and symptoms are mild, monitoring may be enough. Treatment is considered when discharge or contact bleeding is troublesome after other causes have been excluded.

Seek prompt medical care for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, faintness, or discharge during pregnancy with pain or bleeding. These features can point to a problem that needs assessment beyond cervical ectropion.
