Why does cervical ectropion cause bleeding between periods?

With cervical ectropion, glandular cells that normally line the cervical canal are visible on the outer cervix. They contain mucus-producing tissue that is more delicate than the surrounding surface. Small amounts of friction, inflammation, or hormonal change may cause spotting outside the menstrual period.

The same symptom can have other explanations, including contraception, ovulation, pregnancy, infection, polyps, or changes in the lining of the uterus. A clinician may examine the cervix and vagina, review your cycle and medicines, and decide whether testing is appropriate.

Make an appointment if spotting repeats, lasts beyond a brief episode, or occurs with pain, discharge, or bleeding after sex. Write down the timing in relation to your period, sex, contraception, and any pregnancy possibility.

Avoid scented washes and vaginal douching, which may irritate tissue. If ectropion is confirmed and no concerning cause is found, observation may be enough. Ongoing bothersome bleeding can be treated after discussing suitable options with a clinician.

Seek urgent help if bleeding is heavy, you feel faint, or you have severe pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with bleeding. New bleeding after menopause should also be assessed promptly.

Ask whether ectropion is visible, what other causes should be checked, and whether cervical screening is due. Ask what amount or pattern of spotting should lead you to contact the clinic sooner.
