Why does cervical ectropion cause bleeding after sex?

Cervical ectropion happens when soft glandular cells from inside the cervical canal extend onto the visible surface of the cervix. These cells are thinner and more easily irritated than the usual outer covering. Friction during sex can therefore cause light bleeding or pink discharge. Hormonal changes, including those linked with pregnancy or some contraceptives, can make ectropion more noticeable.

Ectropion is a benign cervical finding, but bleeding after sex can also have other causes such as infection, dryness, polyps, or abnormal cervical cells. A clinician may inspect the cervix and test for infection before attributing the symptom to ectropion.

Arrange a check-up if the bleeding is new, repeated, or accompanied by discharge, pain, or an unpleasant odour. Note whether it follows penetration, how long it lasts, and whether you could be pregnant. A water-based lubricant may reduce friction when dryness contributes.

If examination confirms ectropion and other causes have been excluded, treatment may not be needed. Persistent troublesome bleeding can be discussed with a clinician, who may offer a procedure to treat the exposed surface.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or bleeding during pregnancy that is increasing or accompanied by pain. These signs need assessment rather than an assumption that ectropion is responsible.

Ask whether the cervix has the typical appearance of ectropion, whether infection or screening tests are needed, and what treatment options exist if bleeding continues. Ask when to return if spotting happens again.
