Why does cervical dysplasia cause bleeding between periods?

Cervical dysplasia is a change in the cells covering the cervix. The affected tissue can be more sensitive and may bleed with minor contact or irritation. Blood may look like light spotting, pink discharge, or brown discharge and may occur at different points in the cycle. The timing does not show the cause by itself.

Bleeding between periods can also come from hormonal contraception, ovulation, pregnancy, infection, polyps, fibroids, or vaginal irritation. A clinician may ask about cycle timing, pregnancy possibility, contraception, pain, discharge, and prior cervical screening before examining the cervix.

Book an appointment when the bleeding is unexplained, recurs, or follows a previous abnormal screening result. Keep a simple record of the dates, amount, colour, associated pain, and any bleeding after sex. This helps separate bleeding from the uterus, cervix, or vagina during assessment.

Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible, and follow any recommended screening or colposcopy plan. Avoid douching and scented vaginal products, which can worsen irritation. Do not self-treat presumed infection without advice.

Get urgent medical help if bleeding becomes heavy, you feel faint or unusually weak, or you have severe pelvic pain, fever, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Prompt assessment is also sensible when bleeding follows menopause.
