Why does cervical cancer cause persistent pelvic pain?

The cervix sits close to the uterus, vagina, bladder, bowel, pelvic muscles, and a network of nerves. Changes in or around the cervix can irritate these structures, stretch tissue, or create pressure. Pain may be dull, cramping, aching, burning, or sharp, and it may spread to the lower back or thighs.

Pelvic pain can also be related to bleeding, infection, constipation, urinary changes, procedures, or treatment effects. Its pattern matters: note whether it is linked with periods, sex, urination, bowel movements, movement, or a new discharge. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause, so assessment is needed when it persists or changes.

Record where the pain is, how it feels, what brings it on, and whether prescribed medicine helps. Tell the gynaecology or oncology team about new pain, changes in bleeding or discharge, urinary symptoms, constipation, or pain during sex. Ask before using non-prescription pain medicines, especially if you have bleeding, kidney problems, or take medicines that affect clotting.

Contact the treating team promptly for pelvic pain that is worsening, persistent, or limiting sleep, movement, eating, or urination. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe sudden pain, fainting, fever, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, or new weakness or numbness in the legs.
