Why does cervical cancer cause bleeding between periods?

Changes on the cervix can affect its surface and small blood vessels. The tissue may bleed with minor contact or without an obvious trigger, producing spotting between menstrual periods. Cervical cancer may also occur with unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding after sex, although symptoms vary.

Intermenstrual bleeding has many other explanations, including ovulation, contraception, pregnancy-related changes, infection, polyps, fibroids, or hormonal conditions. The pattern alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

Book a clinical review for bleeding that is new, recurring, heavier than expected, or not explained by your usual cycle. A clinician may ask about cycle dates, pregnancy possibility, contraception, medicines, pain, and discharge. They may perform a pelvic examination and recommend cervical screening, infection tests, or imaging.

Record when the bleeding starts and stops, its approximate amount, and whether it follows sex or exercise. Bring any relevant screening history to the appointment.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or a new feeling of serious illness. Possible pregnancy makes bleeding with pain or light-headedness especially urgent.

Ask whether the bleeding pattern suggests a cervical, uterine, hormonal, or pregnancy-related cause, which tests are appropriate, and what follow-up is needed if the first examination is reassuring.
