Why Does Cervical Cancer Cause Bleeding After Sex?

Bleeding After Sex is a very common presentation of Cervical Cancer. Tumours can alter the surface of the cervix and its small blood vessels, so friction during penetration may cause spotting or bleeding. The blood may appear immediately after sex or later, and it may occur with pelvic discomfort, unusual discharge, or bleeding between periods.

Bleeding after sex can also occur with conditions such as cervical inflammation, vaginal dryness, infections, polyps, or hormonal changes. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and recommend testing based on your symptoms, examination, screening history, and age.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist or other qualified clinician if bleeding after sex is new, repeated, or unexplained. Write down when it happens, how much bleeding you notice, whether you have pain or discharge, and the date of your last cervical screening test. Do not delay assessment while waiting to see whether the symptom returns.

Your clinician may discuss a pelvic examination, cervical screening, infection testing, or further assessment such as colposcopy. These checks help identify changes on the cervix and guide the next step; they do not mean that cancer has been diagnosed.
