Why cellulitis can cause facial swelling

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the deeper layers of skin and surrounding tissue. The immune response makes local blood vessels leak fluid into tissue and increases blood flow, causing puffiness, warmth, tenderness and redness. Facial Swelling is a common presentation of Cellulitis. On the face, swelling can spread around the cheek, eye, jaw or lips, and it can make the skin feel tight. Facial swelling also has causes other than cellulitis, including dental problems and allergic reactions.

Arrange same-day medical assessment for suspected facial cellulitis. A clinician needs to examine the area and may prescribe treatment if infection is confirmed. Take prescribed medicine as directed and report if symptoms are worsening rather than settling. Avoid squeezing spots, applying harsh products, or trying to drain a swollen area yourself. Seek urgent medical care if swelling involves the eye, you have pain on moving the eye, vision changes, severe headache, fever with worsening illness, confusion, or rapidly spreading redness. Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat tightness, tongue swelling, or difficulty swallowing. These symptoms require urgent assessment regardless of the cause.

Ask whether the swelling appears to be cellulitis, whether a dental or sinus source needs attention, and what response to treatment you should expect. Confirm exactly when to seek urgent reassessment, especially if the swelling is near an eye.
