Why Does Brittle Nail Syndrome Cause Ridged Nails?

Nails grow from a specialised area beneath the skin at their base. If growth is irregular or the forming nail is fragile, the finished plate may show vertical lines, shallow grooves, or a rough texture. Dryness and splitting can make these ridges more noticeable. A ridge that runs from the base to the tip often grows forward with the nail, while a deeper interruption may reflect an earlier injury or illness.

Do not aggressively buff ridges, since thinning the plate can increase splitting. Take a clear photo as the nail grows if you want to show a clinician whether the line is moving outward.

Arrange an assessment if a ridge is new and deep, affects one nail, becomes painful, or is accompanied by lifting, swelling, bleeding, or a persistent dark streak. Seek advice when ridges appear across many nails with other symptoms or when nails keep breaking despite protection. Examination helps distinguish brittle nail syndrome from injury or another nail disorder.
