Why does a breast cyst cause a breast lump?

A cyst may feel smooth, mobile, or tender, and its size can change with hormonal shifts. Some cysts are felt near the surface, while others are discovered during breast imaging. A lump can also have causes other than a cyst, so touch alone cannot identify it. Imaging helps show whether the area is fluid-filled or solid.

Breast tenderness, fullness, or a change noticed during self-awareness can accompany a cyst. Do not squeeze or repeatedly check the area, as this can increase soreness and make changes harder to judge.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new, persistent, enlarging, or bothersome lump. A clinician may examine the breast and request ultrasound or another suitable test. If imaging confirms a fluid-filled cyst, monitoring may be enough; drainage can be discussed when discomfort or pressure is significant.

Keep track of when you first noticed the lump, whether it changes with your menstrual cycle, and any nipple or skin changes. Bring this information to the appointment.

Seek prompt medical care for a lump with redness, warmth, marked swelling, fever, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a rapidly changing shape. Urgent attention is also appropriate if severe pain or feeling acutely unwell accompanies the breast change.

Ask whether the lump feels fluid-filled, which imaging test is appropriate, whether it needs follow-up, and what changes should bring you back sooner.
