Why does a breast abscess cause a breast lump?

An abscess is a walled-off pocket of infected fluid. As fluid and inflammatory tissue collect, the area becomes swollen and can feel firm, rounded, or soft in the centre. It may be painful, warm, or red, and the skin can look stretched. Some abscesses develop after mastitis or another infection, while others occur outside breastfeeding. A breast lump has several possible causes, so an examination is needed to identify what you are feeling.

Arrange medical assessment rather than trying to squeeze or pierce the lump. A clinician may examine the breast and use imaging to see whether fluid is present. Treatment can involve antibiotics and drainage, depending on the findings. If you are breastfeeding, ask for advice that protects milk removal while reducing discomfort.

Seek prompt care for a painful, hot, red, or rapidly enlarging lump, fever, chills, or feeling faint or unwell. Urgent review is also appropriate if redness is spreading, the nipple changes suddenly, or the lump persists after treatment. Do not delay assessment because an abscess may need drainage.

Ask whether the lump needs imaging, whether drainage is needed, how to care for the area afterward, and which medicines are suitable if you are nursing.
